National Junior Faculty Conference 2026

16–17 November 2026, Karolinska Institute, Campus Solna

What do academic leaders in Sweden need to do to enable research excellence? And who decides what an academic career in this country looks like?

National Junior Faculty invites researchers and stakeholders from across Sweden to a two-day conference on the future of academic careers and research excellence. Sweden has no unified, cross-stakeholder strategy for the career structures that make long-term research excellence possible, and this conference is an attempt to build one. Whether you are early in your career, mid-career, or in a position to change the system others work in, this is a chance to take part in that discussion.

Who should attend

  • Early- and mid-career researchers
  • University leadership and academic managers
  • Research funders and policy actors
  • Other national and institutional stakeholders in research and higher education

The two days run as structured dialogue and interactive sessions rather than a series of keynotes, covering academic leadership, career systems, research assessment and the conditions for research excellence. A key outcome will be the NJF Declaration, a national policy document with structural recommendations on career pathways, leadership development and responsible research assessment, intended to inform universities, funders and policymakers.

National Junior Faculty is the umbrella organisation for the local junior, future and young faculties at Swedish universities, and Lund University’s Future Faculty is one of its member faculties. The conference is supported by Karolinska Institutet.
