Registration open: Annual Future Faculty Retreat on Work–Work Balance

Registration is now open for the 2026 Future Faculty (FF) Retreat. This is our main event of the year and a great opportunity for us, as early-career researchers, to meet, network & support each other in an environment that complements our day-to-day activities. This year’s retreat will be held on April 16th at the Altitude event centrelocated in Brunnshög in north-east Lund.

The theme of this year’s Retreat is “Work-work balance: Intentionally cultivate your professional life”.

As academic researchers, we are asked to complete a myriad of tasks that not only involve our research, but often incorporate teaching and mentoring, organisation, volunteering, and general administration. Then we add our personal obligations and family time into the equation, and it becomes difficult to find a place of calm and balance. The 2026 Retreat features presentations, workshops, and interactive group discussions designed to address multiple facets of balance and how we can apply these with purpose in our professional lives.

This year’s schedule includes a tailor-made workshop for Future Faculty by Dr Desiree Dickerson (Neuroscientist and Clinical Psychologist) titled Chasing the Unicorn: Finding Balance in Academia.

Register before March 22nd.

Attendance is limited, so don’t wait!

We look forward to seeing you on April 16th.

Semmeldagen Fika with Future Faculty: a sweet tradition for new connections

Some traditions are worth keeping — especially the ones that bring people together. Every year around Semmeldagen, Future Faculty invites postdocs and early-career researchers to a relaxed fika with semlor (Sweden’s most iconic “research fuel” pastry). It’s our small annual ritual to create a sugar-sticked path for the things that actually matter in academia: meeting new people, strengthening existing connections, and catching up with friends and colleagues you don’t see often enough.

If you’re new at Lund, new in your group, or simply want to expand your circle beyond your corridor — this is for you. No agenda, no pressure, just good fika and easy conversation.

Why we do this every year

Because networks don’t happen by accident. They happen when there’s space to talk — across departments, disciplines, and job titles. Semmeldagen gives us a perfect excuse to slow down for one hour, say hi to someone new, and reconnect with people we already know. Think of it as community-building… with whipped cream.

Academic Career for Early Career Researchers

Career support session: pathways, teaching eligibility, and what’s expected

Are you an early career researcher and wondering what an academic career path at Lund University can look like — and what you actually need to be eligible for teaching positions? Future Faculty invites you to a focused career support session where we unpack the requirements, the system behind academic appointments, and how to plan your next steps strategically.

This is a practical session for anyone who wants clearer answers to questions like:
What counts as teaching merit? What qualifications matter most? What do committees look for? And how do you build a profile that’s “eligible” rather than “almost”?

What we’ll cover

  • Academic career paths for early career researchers (how roles connect and what typically comes next)
  • Teaching eligibility: what qualifications are required, what evidence is expected, and what “merits” really mean in practice
  • How appointments are evaluated: insights into committee perspectives and common pitfalls
  • Concrete next steps: what you can start doing now to strengthen your portfolio

Speakers

  • Prof. Anders P Håkansson — Chair of the Academic Appointments Committee
  • Helena Persson — Senior Lecturer

You’ll get the chance to hear directly from people with deep experience in academic recruitment and teaching roles — and bring your questions.

Future Faculty & MAX IV Laboratory Roundtable

Exploring X-ray science for your research

Curious about what MAX IV can do for your project — but unsure where to start? Join us for a Future Faculty & MAX IV Laboratory roundtable focused on how to harness X-ray science to answer real research questions.

Whether you work with biological tissue, materials, cells, batteries, proteins, cultural heritage, catalysts (or anything in between), this session is designed to help you translate “I’ve heard MAX IV is powerful” into clear ideas, realistic sample strategies, and next steps.

What we’ll explore

At the roundtable, we’ll focus on practical questions researchers often have when approaching MAX IV:

  • How can you harness the X-ray power of MAX IV for your research?
What kinds of problems are a good match for synchrotron methods, and how to think about feasibility.
  • What kinds of samples can be measured?
Sample formats, preparation considerations, and what typically works well (and what can be tricky).
  • Why: what research questions can MAX IV help answer?
From mapping, structure, and chemistry, to mechanisms and dynamics.

Who should attend?

This event is ideal for postdocs and early-career researchers who:

  • have a project that could benefit from high-resolution or advanced X-ray methods,
  • want to explore techniques before writing a proposal,
  • are already planning beamtime and want a clearer strategy,
  • simply want to understand what’s possible and meet the right people.

No prior synchrotron experience is needed — bring curiosity and your questions.

Academic path: what you need to become a research leader?

Are you aspiring to build a future in academia, perhaps leading your own research group one day? Or are you already taking the first steps toward that goal?

Navigating an academic career involves more than research excellence alone. There are practical aspects, institutional frameworks, and expectations that shape the journey—sometimes openly discussed, sometimes less so. In this session, Docent Ganna Petruk and Associate Senior Lecturer Jacob Vogel will share personal experiences and insights from their own paths toward becoming independent research leaders. Lhinn Holmbergh, Administrative Manager at the Department Office of Laboratory Medicine, will provide valuable perspectives on academic regulations and procedures—essential knowledge to help you move forward confidently, whether or not you see these aspects as central to your research.

Join us for an open conversation designed to support early-career researchers.
